I made this cupcake cake for my high school friend Frank's 30Th Birthday. His sister Marissa requested to have it shaped in the number 30 and the colors to be University of Texas Longhorns, his favorite team. I had some issues with getting the exact burnt orange color, but it turned out well. I delivered the cake to a local bar, and everyone enjoyed the cake. They raved about the flavor and people had up to 2-3 cupcakes. Frank enjoyed it the most. I hope he they saved him some leftovers to take home, but I highly doubt it.
After making the cupcake cake, I realized how much easier cupcake cakes are opposed to making sheet cakes. I think I will stick with cupcake cakes, they are much easier, less clean up, few utensils, and easier to assemble. My biggest worry about making specialty cakes, is getting orders for shaped cakes (CHARACTERS, ANIMALS, ETC)and becoming the next Ace of Cakes bakery. Although I love the work Ace of Cakes does, all the cool cake designs, I realize that I don't have the time or the man power to create those types of cakes. And I'm going for a more classical Southern Theme of simple shapes and designs. The focus is more geared towards the great flavor, and of course I want to design an elegant and creative look. I just have this pet peeve that when things look really pretty, I cannot trust that they will always taste as good as they appear. My main goal for Southern Girl Treats is to produce desserts that look spectacular and taste as great as they look.
